Osteopathy: An introduction to history and treatment methods

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy understands the human body as a complex system in which organs, fascia, muscles, tendons, joints, and bones are interconnected. These systems are functionally and structurally linked. Limitations in one area can cause soft tissue disorders, misalignments, and pain at various levels of the body.

Procedure of osteopathy treatment

Before each treatment, a comprehensive medical history is taken, followed by an osteopathic examination. This includes functional Diagnostics and kinesiological testing. A session typically lasts 20-40 minutes, during which the osteopath uses gentle techniques to treat the craniosacral, visceral, and parietal systems. It is recommended to allow the body 1-2 weeks to recover before considering further treatment.

The effect of osteopathy

Osteopathy is based on the belief that the body has self-healing powers, which are promoted by functional mobility of all bodily systems. Misalignments or adhesions are treated using targeted manipulation techniques to improve mobility and relieve pain.

History of Osteopathy

Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) founded osteopathy in 19th-century America, understanding the human being as a harmonious interplay of body, mind, and spirit. The first school of osteopathy was founded in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892. Since then, osteopathy has evolved and now includes visceral and craniosacral approaches.

Osteopathy in practice

In the United States, there are approximately 54.000 practicing osteopaths who are recognized as physicians and hold the title of DO (Doctor of Osteopathy). This modern form of medicine is becoming increasingly recognized in Germany, where osteopaths develop individualized treatment approaches for their patients.

Note

I would like to point out that the naming of the listed illnesses does not constitute a promise of healing or a guarantee of relief or improvement of the listed conditions. The areas of application of naturopathy are based on the findings and experience of the therapeutic approaches themselves. There are no relevant, reliable scientific findings, i.e., evidence-based studies, that support the effect or therapeutic efficacy of naturopathy.

Some of the listed conditions require conventional medical evaluation or can be treated in a naturopathic practice alongside medical intervention. Your treating therapist will advise you whether treating your condition with naturopathic medicine alone, alongside medical intervention, or whether immediate specialist evaluation is necessary.
