Botanical name of squill: Scilla maritima

Plant family: yacinthaceae / Hyacinthaceae

Main botanical characteristics: In spring, a flowering shoot about 1,5m high sprouts from the bulb, bearing stalked flowers in a spiral arrangement in the upper third.

Flowering time: April-May

Plant parts used: Medium, fleshy bulb scales / Bulbus Scillae

Ingredients: Cardiac glycosides (digitalis-like), flavonoids

Effect: Digitalis-like effect, diuretic, positive inotropic, negative chronotropic, economizes cardiac work, reduces pathologically elevated venous pressure.

Indications: Mild to moderate heart failure with edema, bradycardic forms of heart failure,

TCM: Renal and cardiac edema, ascites, flank pain, splenic enlargement, diabetes insipidus.

Contraindication / Side effects: Concurrent therapy with digitalis glycosides, potassium deficiency. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
