 Botanical name of the oleander : Nerium oleander

plant family: Dogpoison family / Apocynaceae

Main botanical characteristics: Perennial shrub up to 5m tall, leathery, lanceolate leaves up to 15cm, strong midvein, usually in trifoliate whorls. Terminal flowers clustered in umbel-like panicles, calyx deeply five-lobed, and a five-lobed pink or white corolla.

Plant parts used: Leaves / Folium Oleandri

Ingredients: Cardiac glycosides (oleandrin), flavonoids

Effect of Orleander: Positive inotropic, negative chronotropic, (acts similarly to digitalis glycosides)

Indications: Heart failure (heart weakness), functional heart disorders, skin diseases, weeping eczema especially on the back of the head, cradle cap

Contraindication / Side effects: Vomiting, dilated pupils, sensory confusion, diarrhea, colic – no self-medication!!!
